Grand Finale...

7:29*CLICS*Second Floor

12 hours till zero hour... yes siree, my final exam of the year is fast approaching... i'm excited at the prospect of a nice long relaxing summer, but before any of that can happen i have to face this damn ochem final... i studied on the bottom floor of Giesel where surprisingly i got a lot of shit done... now i'm back to CLICS where sadly my progress isn't at the same madman's pace... anywho, two more chapters to finish and a whole mess load of review problems and old final exams to shift through... just now i took a look at my professor's old final exam from a couple of years back and nothing on that test looked remotely familiar... damn! oh wells, dinner break in two... no maybe three hours from now...

11:50pm*Home*Living Room

dai jia hao! yer prolly all wondering what im' doing at home when i should still be over at CLICS studying... well, with the promise of steak at home i just couldn't resist going back home for a filling dinner and was it worth it? hells yeah it was! who knew that a simple slab of meat could ease my tension and rejuvenate me? at around 10:00 at CLICS i was pretty bunrt out as Armando and Steph Ng could tell you... and to be perfectly honest i'm just sick of this shit called ochem... but after taking a hot shower and eating a wonderful steak i realized that the summer will be about 3 months of just relaxing and that one night of missed sleep is nothing especially if i can get a good great out of it... so yeah i'd feel better sleeping now but i'd much rather feel shitty, red eyed, and tired during my final and get a good grade than to just barely pass the motherflower.... okie.. i wasted enough time ranting... back to the books...

Day Three, Study Marathon

1:52*Home*Living Room

Happy to say i think i kicked some butt on my ochem lab final =) it was actually a pretty fair and straightforward test... most of the credit for that will have to go to the 12 hours i spent at CLICS on sunday... =P' as soon as i'm doing typing this out i'm back to the library for another study jam...

side thought...it used to be last quarter i'd spend all my money on food... i'd go out to eat for lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack... then somewhere down the line i realized that i was actually getting a potbelly! i've tried to cut my eating down or at least eat more healthy and instead what i'm doing is usually eating about on average only 2 meals a day... but now to my discovery... i was having lunch at FINS, one of my favorite places to eat, and i couldn't finish my food! usually i can finish my food with some room to spare but today i was only able to finish a fish taco and half my chicken burrito... maybe my stomach shrank? i dunno... but this will prolly help me to lose the gut i've acquired this past month...

7:51pm*CLICS*First Floor

i'm just thinking about how great it's going to be next quarter... no more ochem! this is my last ochem class ever!!!! *sigh* only 2 more days to go...

Day Two, Study Marathon

9:30pm*Second Home*Steph's Room

I've become saturated with organic chem... and to be perfectly honest i think I'm ready to kick ass on this final. i'm actually pretty satisfied with the job i did yesterday at CLICS and i think that study time really helped me to be way ahead of schedule. my study plan for the rest of the night will just be to review my notes and do ochem problems which shouldn't be all too stressful. in fact, i'm watching "Who's wants to be a millionaire" as i type this out... Good luck to everyone who's studying their collective asses for this week's finals. Only one more week and we're free! =)

The End Draws Near...

1:25pm*CLICS*2nd Floor

well, it's hour one into my study marathon and so far so good... half hour break over... back to ochem lab

4:12*CLICS*2nd Floor

4 hours into my study marathon and my progress is actually quite good. by my projections i should be done with ochem lab by 8-9ish. on a more interesting note, i think i might be kickin it with Ian over the summer in LA. my intership in LA with john hopkins has an open male RA position...so, i passed Ian's name to the site director and hopefully they'll see what a great addition he'd be to the program. =) I can't wait for this week to end!

6:37*CLICS*2nd Floor

6 hours in my study marathon.... dayam i'm hungry...good news, i'm done with my ochem lab studying! i'm actually pretty pleased with myself though... i've been able to stay on track for the majority of my time in front of the computer which is amazing considering the fact I tend to do everything other than study when i'm front of a computer... i've scheduled a dinner break at 7:30 with my partner in crime and hopefully afterwards i come back to school to finish this marathon till the closing of CLICS. "That's right folks, we'll be here till 1 in the morning and we need your generous donations! Please call in... we have operators ready and waiting to take your call... and we'll return to the Reggie Saldivar Study Marathon after these short messages..."

9:39*CLICS*1st Floor

Just got back to the library after a 2hour dinner break with my kids, the "baby" and "toddler"... my insipration to study has waned ever since i stepped foot back in the library... hopefully when i get into a study room i'll be more academic... room 327 from 10pm-1am... right now i'm charged with food and caffeine so it should be a good night of studying...

4:03am*Home*Living Room
even with the 2 hour dinner break i was able to stay at CLICS till 1, in fact i ended up studying till 2am! i'm actually quite proud of myself... =) anywho, the feeling of depression which has really affected me for the past week has finally subsided... i think having this ochem lab final under control has something to do with it... i'll leave the details out and save it for another blog... *yawn* definitely, the end is near...

Weekend Update with Reggie Saldivar

This weekend was kicked off with PERMzookie's final mah-jong game before Emiko leaves for Japan. The night was filled with crazy dares, alcohol induced craziness, and or course plenty of memories to span the year we'll be apart. Check out my partner in crime's blog for a more detailed account of the night.

My Daily List...

moment of happiness... rolling around in my empty apartment after measuring the rooms, never underestimate the sheer giddiness that clean and new carpeting can bring!

moment of friendship... eating at McDonalds with Angeline, something i haven't enjoyed since fall quarter...

moment of anticipation... finding out there's a brand new boba place on convoy to try out and the Joy Luck Club plays again this friday! woo hoo!

moment of academia... sitting down in S&E and searching through stacks of IR spectrum only to find out I can't possibly identify my compound for ochem lab... cursing the words "i'm fucked" under my breath is an understatement...

moment of iron chefism... making pork and ginger dumplings as a midnight snack...

moment of peace... driving home with all the windows down. moon roof open, and the radio off...

moment of regret... seeing my dad after coming home early and having nothing to say as i jet off back to school...

it's about 3 in the morning and i've been struck with a crazy idea... call it the science major in me but i think now is time for another patented Redgeriment (reggie and experiment, together at last!) as only a small group of people know, my first experiment was a total bust, if you'd like to know more about it just ask me... anywho, considering that i have to study for an ochem midterm and write up a lab for my ochem lab both of which are on wednesday i came to the realization that i probably will not being getting much sleep... so, here's my experiment, I'll record my progress/regression as i try to stay awake from now until i can no longer take it. the parameters of this little experiment will follow, only short 15 minute naps will be allowed and each nap must be at a minimum of 4 hours apart. in addition, i can use anything i see fit to keep myself awake, ie. coffee, soda, exercise, cold showers... check back in 4 hours before i get to take my first power nap...

5.29.01 3:27am
did push ups and i seem to be on my second wind... motivated to finish this damn lab report!

5.29.01 5:55 am
my mom found me at the computer this morning still up. i told her i wanted to call in sick today from work and she concurred. I'm still doing pretty well and i'm almost done with my lab report. Luckily I've had Angeline and Phil to talk to throughout the night/day. I'm making myself a cup of tea, looks like i'm gonig to call it quits pretty soon

5.29.01 7:03 am
bleh... no use fighting it... i want to sleep. experiment #2 offically ends 15 minutes from now (the time it'll take me to fall asleep) phil was right, sleep is good for you =P`

here's the deal... you're given three choices and you can only pick two... which do you pick? on the application for ucsd they should also have a section in which you pick two of the three "social/study plan options"

In order to ensure the highest level of commitment by our students please select two of the following options. Your selections will help our admissions department determine your relative success as a student at UCSD

___ school work
___ friends
___ sleep

damn those people who can pick all three options and still get good grades!

it's about 11:10 at clics and i have yet to get any studying done. i haven't added anything new to this thing so i guess now would be the best time considering the fact I'm not utilizing my time any more wisely. right now my mind is a jumble of conflicting thoughts all wanting to be expressed at once... which one should i pick? well, at the present moment i'm seated at my favorite corner computer on the second floor of clics and all around me are the sounds of busy students. every once in a while a wave of clicking will rise like the crashing of gentle waves along the shores of the del mar. possibly these people are typing papers or most likely like me they're all chatting on AIM and so have been inspired to chat with friends instead of typing up their ever important papers. i on the other hand shouldn't even be near a computer since studying ochem doesn't even require the use of one, well... perhaps for the times i need to check up on homework assignments or compare IR spectra. tonight is just one of those nights where i can't seem to get the drive to study. as hard as i try my head just doesn't want to absorb the mechanisms of aldehydes and ketones and i could care less about the eletrconegativity of a carbon atom. i really need to tear myself away from this thing. nah, i'll just stay on AIM (just in case someone needs to talk to me... ) i wonder what mayrin and phil are doing right now? should i call them or message them? hmmm... i pick up the phone and press the little green button and scroll through the past ten calls i've made... philip is number 5 and mayrin is number 10... interesting how i'm always able to find them in my top 10. =) strange to think that 3 people could be so close and dependent on one another in such a short period of time. maybe it's just the honeymoon period, however i doubt that... i'm sure if we really were sick of each other's company we would have parted a long time ago. awwwww... now i'm all happy thinking about you guys =) okie, now i'm motivated to study...

the camera pulls out from an extreme close-up of the computer screen as the text flows from my fingers...sharp pan and close-up the little smile forming on my face as i realize in this place of institutionalized learning and stress my job is to be the purveyor fun and chaos... "i am the dance..." violins swell to a climax and screen fades to black... credits roll and the ending theme plays... fin

Sunday, April 29, 2001

It seems every so often I go into these modes where I find it necessary to take a real hard and deep look onto myself, tonight is of those times.

lucid dreaming 101:
find a comfortable sleeping position
close your eyes and try not to think of anything as you slowly drift to sleep
if thoughts of the day come into your head try to remove them by making your mind a black slate
slow your breathing down and continue to keep your mind blank
falling asleep isn't actually a slow process, in fact if you're conditioned yourself well sleep should come over you within minutes of laying down.
when you fall asleep your REM sleep cycle begins
dreams will usually occur between level 4 (deep sleep) and level 2 (moderate sleep) thatabout 2 hours after falling asleep
as soon as you've become aware of your dream state try to remain calm, it's often overwhelming to realize you're in your dreams, but stay calm... if you notice youself drifting out of your dream state try looking at your hand or spinning around, it may sound silly but these techniques are proven to help you stay in your dream world. as soon as you've gotten your bearings explore your dream state... fly, run, call your friends, face your fears, or peform lude acts of debauchary anything is fair game in your dreams!

as some of you may already know i have a fascination with dreams and what they tell us. i don't know how many people have ever experienced a lucid dream, but it is seriously one of the most fun things I've learned to do in life. although i haven't perfected my technique it is something i highly recommend everyone should learn to do, esp. us college kids who hardly get enough sleep as it is, we should take advantage of our precious dream time! these are just a few tips to help you guys get started.

i originally wanted to discuss what was really going through my mind, but along the way I lost my train of thought. it's pretty sad that given the many opprotunites i have with my friends when I'm most eloquent and have the most things to share about myself i'm by myself. i take for granted so many times a day friends and family ask me "how are you doing?" my reply is always I'm "okay" and although i'm not shy i tend to hold things back not reveling too much of myself. why do you ask? i dunno why... a mutlitude of factors most likely... given the choice of director or actor i think deep down there's an actor inside of me, but to be behind the camera and still have my vision tangibly recorded is far more appealing. at least then if the movie sucked people tend to blame the actors and writers as opposed to the one directing the shots... and maybe that's why i tend not to talk too much about my personal life, the fear of ridicule or judgement is something i fear greatly... i notice sometimes when asked a question I'll think about the "right" answer to give... this is something that happens esp. with my parents and I know at this point in my life they're letting me be my own man, but i guess it's the kindergartener in me that tells me i shouldn't give them the whole truth... it's the mentality that as long as my parents are under the impression things are good then they won't worry... enough...

what was supposed to be short and cute has ended up eating into my sleepy time so i'll head off to bed now and feel better in the morning...=)

Happy Easter

at the present moment i'm feeling mixed emotions all at once. yesterday i just both my parents that i wanted to move out next year and to my surprise my dad was very supportive. he told me that i was old enough to make my own descisions and that if i thought moving out was the best thing I should go ahead and do it. i was honestly expecting him to put up a fight but to hear him say that he trusted me and that he knew i was ready really made me feel that i was making the right descision. hopefully i'll finalize my whole living situation with steph soon. i was really aiming for a single but listening to phil tell me to take a double for the umpteenth time made me consider doubling up so tonight i asked david tran if he was down. apparently if things work out, me and david will be roomies! =) while having easter lunch with my family i realized that as soon as i move out there is no turning back. it's my small step into the real world cuz i mean after i move out there's no returning back home to live. right now i'm filled with all these emotions.. i'm scared, thrilled, excited, and sad all at once and the only thing i can do to deal with these emotions is to let them flow through me overwise i feel as if i would just explode. it's really an overwhelming time for me but something i can't wait to experience...

with the end of the Lenten season the Fun Crew, whom i hadn't seen in forever (2 days), made a trip to get boba and kick it at Dave's with armando, david, tone, steph ng, ian, and baker... the fun crew tonight came to a pivotal descision that this quarter we will all be buckling down and studying/working our collective asses off... best of luck to my silly soc majors...wait i should also add that phil has officially changed his major of choice to usp in order to better his ranking amongst our little fun crew competetion... anywho, we'll see how long it takes before we start to see the signs of withdrawl symptoms from not seeing each other on a daily basis... my daily zen thought of the day is life is painful, suffering is optional. discuss amongst yourself =)

I have a renewed love of hip-hop and can't wait to get started on a routine for APSA's grad banquet... anywho, i just finished writing up my pre-lab and now i can get at least 4 hours of sleep tonight... i vow to stay more academically focused this quarter; gotta study more and play less... *yawn* anywho, i'm super tired right now... if you all need stress relief come with me and mayrin to hip-hop dance class today at rimac, you can still register for the class i think... *yawn* alrighty my body is telling me to get some much needed rest... oyasumi nasai minnasan!

PERMzookie anyone?

so much for trying to get any real work done yesterday... you'd think i'd be able to get some work done with only one class in the morning, but of course that's never the case when yer part of the fun crew. We, mayrin and i, found a new restaurant on Convoy called Tofu House which was pretty good. I highly recommend it if you like Korean food, but you should go with at least someone who speaks Korean that way they give you more side dishes.. =P` of course my day wouldn't be complete if i didn't kick it with my partner in crime Phil. We met up with Armando, Emiko, and Michelle at fashion valley to do a little shopping and find an AT&T wireless place so Phil could complain about the fucked up service they provide. You should all call Phil's cell phone just to hear his voicemail, it pretty damn funny. Anywho, we went to UTC and found out they don't even have a wireless store at UTC anymore so pretty much Phil is screwed until he can a hold of the company. I need a nap... btw, Mah Jong is one hella fun game! =D check out the mah jong international tournament live from Taipei, Taiwan on ESPN2... hahahaha

I'm back together...

I now see why I can never keep a journal... i'm just too damn lazy to update the sucker. Anywho, I'll try to keep up as best I can. So what's happened since Monday? hmm... well I went to watch the free preview of Josie and Pusscats at Horton Plaza with Makasama-san, Panya-Kun, David, Mayrin, Phil, Armando, Katherine, Mikey, Michelle, Steph, Tone, and Ian. (i think that's all of them) anywho, that whole movie was just one big commercial for Coke and Target, there was just mad product placement going on. Let me tell you this much, those songs they played during the movie were pretty darn catchy though... do i smell dance routine? hahahaha

anywho, today was an alright day. i didn't do any homework and went out to dinner with agnes at Seoul BBQ. I forgot how expensive that place was... it was definately worth it though. we finished everything on our table! =) i got more pictures from spring break courtesy of Rosie. you can check them out on my homepage when i finally decide to sit down and write some code for it.

I can't describe it...

right now it's about 3:30 in the morning, i can't seem to fall asleep, and I don't really know the reason why. i apologize for the bad entry today, my thought are as incoherent as my typing... I just arrived home at about 3 this morning after spending some time with my Fun Crew. Tonight I really didn't feel like spending the night although Mayrin did say she was going to kick me out. =P` But seriously, even if she hadn't said that I felt something strange that night. I really can't describe what I'm feeling right now. Maybe its because we've all just returned from awesome spring breaks, but right now I'm just not feeling up to par. (By the way, I'll finish up my road trip journal soon...) Driving home on sunday morning I thought I was ready to go back to school and for most of the day I was feeling great. It really wasn't until I got home that I felt something wrong. It's one of those feelings you really can't place your finger on but you know its there. Its almost a deep sense I despair I'm feeling at the moment that's compeling me to type instead of sleep. I have this urgency to do something but I have nothing to work on. *sigh* this is really starting to bug me... the fact I'm feeling depressed for no apparent reason... right now my mind is trying to think of logical reasons as to why I'm feeling this way. for about 10 minutes i questioned my whole outlook on life. beginning of last quarter i realized how short life, college life namely, was so short... in addition, i came to the conclusion that i should be playing hard as well as studying hard. sadly, last quarter my playing outdid my studying. but really dropping my two classes hardly phased me, esp. with the support of friends telling me it was alright... i thought to myself "dude, don't even worry about it... you've never dropped courses before.. and i mean, everyone is entitled to a bad quarter, right?" anyways, i guess with the start of a new quarter i've seen that i need to study more... a lot more... already a handful of friends are already gearing up to take their MCATs while i still think about what i want to do for the weekend. i feel as if i'm not doing enough in terms of academics.... i mean, its great to be able to play and stuff but seriously, not to spite phil and mayrin, I'm not a soc major and I can't expect myself to be able to play like a soc-major and receive the grades of a pre-med student... i think that's what it all boils down to at the moment...*sigh* at the moment i'm taking a hard and honest look at my future and seeing that the work that needs to be done isn't getting done... it's this introspection, i think, is what is making me so damn depressed... anywho, its almost 4in the morning and i feel a little better... perhaps a little nap and a talk with a friend later today will help...

March 30, 2001

It is officially day 6 of our International Spring Break. Currently the group; Rosie, Phil, and Me are at the last stop of our trip, Vancouver. Before we get to the polans of the day I should update every one to what has been going on during the past 6 days.

Day 1

We left San Diego around 8 o'clock after picking up the final member of the group Rosie. This is the very beginning of our great adventure up the west coast! Our first pit stop was in Westwood, Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the line to DeDe Reese so too long for us to wait so we stopped at In n Out, gased up, and started heading up to San Francisco. On the way up I-5 we spot Pismo Beach, CA and decide to check it out. For some strange reason the name stuck out and the Scooby Doo Gang needed to do some exploring. Stopping at a gas station we asked the attendant what Pismo was famous for and she merely replied it was a great surfing town. Anywho, i'm glad we decided to do our own exploring... we ended up by this awesome cliff that over looked the Pacific. The rain and scenic view made for awesome beginning to day 2.

Day 2

Friday, March 23, 2001

March 23, 2001

To date I've been on Spring Break since Tuesday, but since none of my friends are done yet I really haven't done much. That's not to say I haven't been having fun... far from it! In fact, I believe me and Phil, my partner in crime who still has finals, have taken having fun to new heights. We're gearing up for our grand international spring break adventure: Fun Boy Style... we'll be leaving San Diego tomorrow night and head up to the bay area to play. From there we're planning to hit Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Tahoe on the way back down. As for the general order of things or even if we'll make it to all our targets we'll have to see. I still have to pack a week's worth of clothing and gear for our trip and make sandwhiches for my Fun Crew tomorrow. What's happening tomorrow besides leaving for the bay? Tomorrow will be Beach Day for me, Mayrin, and Phil... what a great way to kick off spring break and celebrate the conclusion of finals!
